NLM NEW LEADER MANUFACTURING oooo Weld apprenticeship opportunity for area high school student MEET JACK >>>>> Jack spends his early mornings at New Leader Manufacturing (NLM) working as a Youth Weld Apprentice, then travels down the road to start his school day at Prairie High School. While gaining hands-on experience at NLM, Jack will also receive related classroom education through Kirkwood's Advanced Manufacturing and Welding Career Academy. The Registered Youth Weld Apprenticeship program at NLM is one of the first programs of its kind in Eastern lowa. Jack became interested in the opportunity when he felt he wanted to advance his career as an early welder. "I was working for a small shop before I felt that I wanted to take my career path further. Thank you to all the great people at NLM for giving me a chance," said Jack. For Jack, welding is more than just a career, though. "The first time I picked up a mig gun and fused the metal together I fell in love with it. Ever since then I've enjoyed what I can create with steel." One of the goals of the Youth Weld Apprenticeship program is to provide students with an opportunity for mentorship and hands-on experience while also receiving related education in the classroom, and by doing so, contributes to one's lasting career in the skilled trades. Jack is hopeful that one day he, too, can contribute to others' desire for the skilled trades. "I get paid to do one of my favorite things, and I hope that other kids in high school will follow the same route I did and use the chance if they get it," Jack continued. "I also hope that one day I can teach my kids how to weld at home and they can follow my path as a welder." VISIT US AT NEWLEADER.COM/CAREERS KE NER.
