CELEBRATING A DISTINGUISHED CAREER After 35 years and thousands of cardiac surgeries, Dr. James M. Levett, MD, FACS, Physicians' Clinic of lowa, is retiring. During his career, Dr. Levett has been instrumental to the health care industry and to the community of Cedar Rapids, lowa. He is one of our area's most recognized heart surgeons, having maintained an active practice in adult cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery for the past 35 years. He has personally performed more than 5,000 cardiac surgery procedures. In concert with his extensive medical accomplishments, Dr. Levett also is a respected colleague, leader, author, husband and father. Among his many accomplishments, he: Served as Chief Medical Officer of Physicians Clinic of lowa from 2001-2013. In 2003, he led PCI to become certified to IS0 9001:2000, the largest medical group in the U.S. to achieve this distinction. Ika past president of the lowa Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and served as a National Examiner for the Baldrige National Quality Award Program in 2003 and 2004. Was recognized in 2019 with the Distinguished Service Award from the National Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Currently serves as Surgical Director, Perioperative Services at UnityPoint- St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Is the past chair of the Healthcare Division of the American Sodiety for Quality and is the advisor for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons on the Relative Value Update Committee of the AMA. Was the principal investigator for an AHRQ grant awarded in 2005, entitled Utilization of IS0 9001 Principles as a Model for Community Cooperation in Establishing an Anticoagulation Clinic. The anticoagulation dinic has served over 6000 patients since 2005. Is an author and/or contributing author of over 100 original articles, books, and scientific abstracts. The second edition of his book, Using ISO 9001 in Healthcare: Applications for Quality Systems, Performance Improvement, Clinical Integrotion, Accreditation, and Patient Safety, was published by Quality Press in May 2014. 35 YEARS Congratulations on your retirement!
