The Iowa City Water Division serves approximately 74,220 people and has approximately 27,736 customer service connections. The average daily use of water for the year 2016 was 5.6 million gallons per day (MGD). Iowa City has a state-of-the-art water purification facility providing water to the community. Five different sources of water can be utilized. Deep wells include two Jordan wells (approximately 1,600 feet deep) and three Silurian wells (approximately 400 feet deep). There are four alluvial wells, shallow wells approximately 40 feet deep that use the sands and gravel adjacent to the river to naturally filter impurities from the raw source before reaching the purification facility. Surface water sources include the Iowa River and a manmade lake located on the facility site.

Because of the many water sources on two water well sites, Iowa City has the ability to provide an excellent blend of high quality water as well as an abundant capacity.
