HOW AGRICULTURE & FOOD SAFETY CAN KEEP US HEALTHY IN A PANDEMIC In the same ways that veterinarians, food scientists, and farmers have learned over the years to defend their flocks & herds with biosecurity measures, these same concepts can be applied to better understand the measures we need to take to defend ourselves. 1. 2. WASH YOUR HANDS CLEAN & DISINFECT DISEASE MOVES BY OUR HANDS. The importance of hand washing is more important than ever. DISEASE MOVES BY CONTAMINATED OBJECTS. Routinely clean all frequently touched surfaces (table tops, door knobs, etc.) Use cleaning agents per label instructions. Not all disinfectants work together. Bleach & vinegar or bleach & ammonia produce toxic gas when used together. 3. 6 FT. CONTROL EXPOSURE CONTROL YOUR EXPOSURE BY LIMITING INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS. Keep a safe distance (6 ft.) between you and others. Wear a cloth face covering in public. Avoid touching others. Avoid touching your face. Cough and sneeze into your sleeve. Avoid touching common surfaces without disinfecting first. 4. O BEST PRACTICES PROTECT THE FLOCK For many of the same reasons farmers keep their livestock in barns (turkeys, chickens, and hogs) to prevent animals from spreading disease among themselves, we should try to isolate ourselves to slow the cross transmission of the COVID-19 illness.
